Mountaineering Ireland has launched One From The Hills, a challenge to all hillwalkers and climbers to remove one item of litter from the hills or crags each time we’re out.
The idea is simple, if we can get everyone taking home one item of litter for recycling or proper disposal, it will make a huge difference. Don’t think of it as picking up other people’s rubbish – you’re helping to protect the beauty of the places we get so much benefit from.
Why one item? Lots of people, each picking up one item of litter, will do much more to raise awareness than one person picking up lots of litter.
Carrying a small bag in your pack makes it easier to pick up that one item, especially when it’s wet. Keep safe by putting your hand inside the bag to pick up the litter, thus avoiding direct contact with the item.
The One From The Hills campaign was inspired by Mountaineering Ireland member, Brendan Roche, Chairperson of the Setanta Mountain Goats. What a fantastic way to show our appreciation for the hills and crags as we return after the Covid-19 lockdown – thanks Brendan!
Please practice and promote One From The Hills by posting a photo of your litter item on social media and tagging it #OneFromTheHills.
