Ards and North Down Borough Council had received funding under the DAERA Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation fund to carry out improvements to Cairn Wood. As part of the first phase of these improvement works, an extension to the car park and installation of a new toilet block completed in November 2020. Work is now starting on the next phase of works, which will deliver the following two lower section trails:
- Ballysallagh Trail: a category 1 multi-use trail – all ability, walking and family cycling trail (approx. 1.8km)
- Woodland Trail: a category 2 multi-use trail – walking and family cycling (approx. 3.7km)
The forest will remain open to the public while these works are taking place and only the sections that works are being completed on will not be accessible.
To facilitate these works the car park may have slightly fewer available spaces during this period (April to August 2021). It is important to note that there will be no alternative parking available at Cairn Wood.
During this period please do not park on the roadside leading up to and adjacent to the the car park as this is creating dangerous road safety issues.
