Bunkers Hill Walk, Cycle & Play Trail

(2 reviews)

Bunkers Hill is a small, recently felled forest at the edge of Castlewellan Town. Developed in October 2014 this short circular trail is suitable for walking and family cycling only and incorporates 3 panoramic viewpoints.

It is complemented by a Natural Play Trail for children aged between 4 and 11 years. The Play Trail is the first of its kind in Castlewellan and is made almost entirely out of natural materials. It includes basket swings, a lookout tower, amphitheatre and seats as well as a bespoke climbing wall.

  • This place is amazing for children, great wooden play park and lovely walk with stunning views. However, having visited here with my 4 children it’s a pity to say I will not be back. Nothing to do with the facilities or views!!! They were amazing. But the shear let down of locals allowing their dogs to go to the toilet everywhere and anywhere! My children’s shoes, trousers and bike tyres were covered and my eldest even managed to get some on his hands. Such a pity, someone needs to start fining people, there’s absolutely no excuse as there’s plenty of dog bins around the area! Having to give this a poor rating I’m afraid just because of the dangers of the dogs droppings everywhere! Mostly in the park which is a disgrace!!

From the Main Street in Castlewellan town centre, drive onto Upper Square which borders a car park (there are public toilets available here).

From Upper Square turn left or right (depending on the direction of travel) onto Circular Road – Castlewellan Community Centre is signposted from here.

Travelling in a straight direction the road becomes ‘Bunkers Hill’.

On the left there is an Irish-speaking school called Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche. The entrance to Bunkers Hill is directly after this on the left.
