About the Event

This event has now been cancelled due to COVID-19. A new date will be announced in due course. 

All walks take place within the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council area. On Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March, you can choose a moderate or challenging walk to experience the Sperrins in your own way.

Saturday 28 March 2020 – Base: Gortin Activity Centre (www.gortincentre.com)

Walk 1 – Challenging Walk

“The Landscape Speaks- Place names in the Sperrins.”

This 12km walk on track and open hillside traces the meanings attached to the natural landscape around Mullaghcarn, exploring and discovering the meanings of rivers, places and significant historical features hidden in the Irish landscape.

Registration Time: 9.00am

Details: 12km / 5hrs; suitable for walkers who are comfortable with 5hrs+ walking on rough terrain.

Cost: £5 per person

Walk 2 – Moderate Walk

“From Monks to Kingships: Dynasties in the Sperrins.”

This 8km walk is predominantly on double track with some open ground, exploring the historic dynasties around Bessy Bell since times of early settlement including the area now known as Harry Avery’s Castle and the ecclesiastical significance of Ardstraw.

Registration Time: 10am

Details: 8km / 4hrs; suitable for walkers comfortable with 4hrs+ walking on trails

Walk 3 – Challenging Walk

“The Flight of the Earls (Part II)”

This 12km walk is predominantly across open ground, re-tracing the supposed route of the O’Neill and O’Donnell clans and entourage on their journey west up the Glenelly Valley to Rathmullan in 1607.

Registration Time: 9.00am

Details: 12km / 5hrs; suitable for walkers who are comfortable with 5hrs+ walking on rough terrain.

Cost: £5 per person

Walk 4 – Moderate Walk

“The Bronze Age Experience”

This 8km walk predominantly on double track explores the landscape around Carrickmore with Neolithic eyes, reading the signs and discovering the remnants of our fore-bearers’ settlements.

Cost: £5 per person

Registration Time: 10am

Details: 8km / 4hrs; suitable for walkers comfortable with 4hrs+ walking on trails

What to bring

Participants are recommended to wear Hiking Boots for all walks. Please be prepared for all weathers. Transport will be provided to start of each of walk.
